To calculate the square footage of kitchen cabinets, follow these steps to measure the total visible surface area (for painting, refinishing, or material estimates):

Step 1: Measure Each Cabinet

For every cabinet (base, wall, pantry), note:

Height (H)

Width (W)

Depth (D)

Step 2: Calculate Surface Area Per Cabinet

Use this formula for visible surfaces (excluding the back, which is against the wall):
Surface Area (SA) = (H × W) + 2 × (H × D) + (W × D)
(Front + 2 Sides + Top)

Example:

A base cabinet with:

H = 34.5", W = 36", D = 24"

SA = (34.5 × 36) + 2 × (34.5 × 24) + (36 × 24)
= 1,242 + 1,656 + 864 = 3,762 sq inches
Convert to sq ft: 3,762 ÷ 144 = ~26.13 sq ft

Step 3: Adjust for Shared Walls/Adjacent Cabinets

Subtract overlapping areas where cabinets are side-by-side or against walls.

Example: If two cabinets share a side, subtract 34.5" × 24" = 5.75 sq ft from the total.

Step 4: Total All Cabinet Surface Areas

Add the surface areas of all cabinets:

Cabinet Type Dimensions (H×W×D) Surface Area (sq ft)
Base Cabinet 34.5"×36"×24" 26.13
Wall Cabinet 30"×30"×12" 14.25
Pantry 84"×24"×24" 61.5
Total   101.88 sq ft

Key Notes

Doors: Include door surfaces separately (e.g., two doors on a 36" cabinet = 2 × 34.5"×18" = 8.625 sq ft).

Open Shelving: Measure shelves if refinishing.

Purpose: Use this method for estimating paint, veneer, or laminate.

Quick Estimate

Linear Feet × 1.5 ≈ Total Sq Ft

Example: 20 linear feet × 1.5 = 30 sq ft.
